I have been an educator for too many years! I have spent much of 2021 teaching online as a teacher for students who are unable to attend school for medical reasons. We started the year meeting in homes and our hub but lockdowns changed it all. Online learning became the new normal! I taught students from year 3 to Year 13 (English only)
Several years ago while completing a Master of Education I supplemented my income by working as an after school tutor. I loved the personal connection and felt I could really make a difference for students who were struggling at school. I decided that in 2022 I would retire from teaching but I just love it so much I made a decision that I could work from home and still teach. As I live in a rural environment in Helensville, online learning seems the way to go!
I would like to provide individual tuition especially for primary school students who are struggling readers/writers as that is my special interest. I use a variety of methods working from the students interest and combine a phonics method with reading recovery. I can also help students with early Maths and have found many students have learning gaps in this area. Often when I was working with Year 10 students I had to take them back to initial concepts they had missed much earlier on in order to bring them up to where they need to be. I do think learning should be fun and connect the the students interest.
I have written a book called 'Assessment for Learning' which outlines a methodology for teaching which works. Another set of books I have written is 'The Key Competencies' which is based on the key competencies we need to develop for a holistic learning approach. I include much of this in my teaching.
I am available to work with any homeschooling groups and can offer group tuition as well as one to one learning. I will use Zoom meetings combined with a website, Google Docs/Slides/Forms and email or posted resources.
